PREP SWIMMING: LHS girls swimmers bring home eight top times

The La Grande girls swim team didn’t have the numbers some of the other swim clubs did, but that certainly didn’t deter the Tigers.

La Grande finished second to Pendleton at The Dalles-Wahtonka Swim Invitational Saturday.

The La Grande girls competed with just eight swimmers, while the La Grande boys swam with just 10.

“For only having eight girls and 10 boys competing, we did extremely well against teams much bigger than us,” La Grande head coach Darren Dutto said. “Both Pendleton and La Salle have more than 50 swimmers on their teams.”

The boys team finished third behind Pendleton and La Salle, respectively.

La Grande won eight of the 22 events, with the girls stealing the show by taking 7-of-11 girls events. The girls won the 200-medley relay and 400-freestyle relay. Abbey Felley won two events, the 200-individual medley and the 500 freestyle, in near personal best times. Shelby Baker won the 100 freestyle and tied for first in the 50 freestyle. Hannah Roberts was first in the 100 backstroke, in a personal best time, and second to Baker in the 100 freestyle. Team captain Becca Haynes was second in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle.

On the boys side, Bryce Ebel won the 50 freestyle and was second in the 100 freestyle. Team captain, and the only senior, Emmitt Ambert, was sixth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle. Josh Ebel was fourth in the 200-individual medley and third in the 100 breaststroke. Keegan Dutto was sixth in the 200-individual medley and fifth in the 500 freestyle. Freshman Tony Clay had a fourth-place finish in the 100 butterfly, which was a personal best time. Freshman Trevor Hoffman dropped significant amounts of time in both of his events to place sixth in the 200 freestyle and eighth in the 100 butterfly.

“Trevor had a really great meet, with some great racing,” Dutto said. “I was extremely pleased with the progress of our younger swimmers. There has been significant improvement in the last couple of weeks and that was reflected in the quality of swims that we had this weekend.”

La Grande will travel to the Hood River Invite Saturday.
