PREP WRESTLING: LHS brings home mat title
ESTACADA — La Grande was one of a few teams that braved the roads to Estacada to open the wrestling season. Teams on the western side of the state opted to stay home, leaving six teams at the tournament.
Tournament directors opted to go to a dual format, and La Grande head coach Klel Carson worked out his lineup on the bus ride.
The trip was worth it, because La Grande won each dual, and only lost six matches en route to opening the season with a first-place finish.
The Tigers had seven wrestlers who went through the dual unscathed.
“It was a great first tournament for us,” Carson said. “All the boys wrestled really well. Even the boys that didn’t win every match. We couldn’t ask for much more than what we got.”
Caleb Woodworth, wrestling at 182 pounds, was named the outstanding wrestler of the event. Coery Issacson, Ryan Middleton, Tyler Isaacson, Nick Kavanaugh, Preston Armstrong and Dylan Reece also finished without losing a match.
“They all wrestled some tough kids,” Carson said. “To be able to win each match is a great accomplishment and something to build on for the rest of the season.”
La Grande will host the Muilenberg Tournament beginning Friday.
