The La Grande Tigers lost a huge opportunity to snag a baseball game Friday against the Grant Union Prospectors.

The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning of their second game against Grant Union, but a double play and a fly ball ended the game, a 3-2 Grant Union victory in Greater Oregon League action.

La Grande (4-5 overall, 0-2 league) lost the first game 8-2, committing five errors in that contest.

Thats kind of been our bugaboo all year, La Grande coach Dennis Young said. We make a lot of errors defensively and get in a hole and that sets the tone the rest of the game.

La Grandes two errors in the second game came in the sixth inning of the second game and led to Grant Unions winning runs.

Until then, La Grande pitcher Aaron Thomas had given up just four hits.

Grant Union took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, but a sacrifice fly by Tanner Mellinger tied the contest in the bottom of the frame.

After Grant Union took the lead in the sixth, La Grande answered with a run of its own. Jason Smith hit a one-out double to left center field, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the seventh, Adam Kleck led off with a double to left field. Cody Periman singled, then Kelly Moore singled to load the bases. But Brenton Dowdy grounded to the pitcher, who threw home for the force out on Kleck. The relay to first got Dowdy for the double play.

That was probably the only place you dont want the ball to go, is back to the pitcher, Young said.

Jeremy Georges fly ball to center field ended the game.

In the first game, the Prospectors had a hit every inning and scored at least one run an inning from the third on.

La Grande took an early lead when Klecks ground ball scored Aaron Thomas in the first inning.

Mellinger added a home run on the first pitch of the fourth inning, cutting Grant Unions lead to 4-2.

The Tigers next play Tuesday against DeSales in Walla Walla.
