PV EDGES WALLOWA; UNION, ELGIN WIN

By The Observer

POWDER VALLEY Amanda Bingham had five kills and Cali Taylor and Joelle Bain each had two blocks in Powder Valleys 15-10, 15-13 non-league prep volleyball victory Thursday over Wallowa.

Theyre pretty scrappy little players, Powder Valley coach Jane Wisdom said of the Cougars They were picking up a lot of our everything.

Powder Valley (4-1) visits Cove today in an Old Oregon League match. Wallowa (4-2) plays Saturday at a tournament in Halfway.

Union rallies past Rockets

PILOT ROCK Union remained perfect by rallying past Pilot Rock Thursday.

The Bobcats lost the first game 13-15, but beat the hosting Rockets 15-5, 15-11 in the final two games for the non-league match win.

It was 14-3 before we started to play, Union coach Patty Herron said of the first game.

Jana Brotherton closed the score by serving seven straight points to turn the momentum.

The difference came at the net, where Unions tall front line of Brotherton, Sarah Bomberger and Shonda Titus provided key defense.

Those three big girls got their hands on a lot of blocks, Herron said.

Melissa Helmer went 22-for-22 serving with 21 points. Herron also credited the defensive play of DeeAnna Hall and Brittany Wright.

Union hosts Pine-Eagle in its Wapiti League opening match today, then travels to the Sherman County Tournament Saturday.

Elgin beats TigerScots

ATHENA Elgin earned its first road win of the season when it beat Weston-McEwen Thursday 8-15, 15-9, 15-9.

The visiting Huskies, who dropped the first game, rallied from an 8-1 second-game deficit behind nine straight service points from DeLeah Wiles.

We really dug ourselves a deep hole, but we pulled it out, Elgin coach LeeAnn Case said. It was bleak there for a bit. We played well for our first road match of the season.

Kristi Case and Leanne Foster had three kills apiece for Elgin (2-1). Case added four solo blocks.

The Huskies travel to the Sherman County Tournament Saturday.
