NORTH POWDER Jordan Valley made a statement Friday afternoon to those who doubted they were worthy of a 3-0 record.

The Mustangs are better than many Powder Valley Badgers football fans and players anticipated.

I think our kids realize that our leagues not as weak as they thought it was, Powder Valley coach Alan Stanfield said after his team came from behind for a 42-34 Old Oregon League victory.

The Mustangs (3-1 overall, 1-1 league) had a 22-6 lead after the first quarter thanks to three touchdowns by tailback Mark Freese.

Im wondering when the bleedings going to stop, Stanfield said, recalling the first half.

Freese ran the Badger defenders ragged early in the game. Powder Valley (5-0, 2-0) had problems tackling and that allowed the Mustangs to gain 231 yards on the ground.

After Freeses second touchdown, Powder Valleys Ryan Browne fumbled the kickoff return and the Mustangs recovered. A few plays later, Freese scored his third touchdown and ran in the two-point conversion for a 16-point lead.

We hadnt been behind once this year, Stanfield said. When we got down in the first quarter, the first reaction was to chip at each other a little bit.

Powder recovered, however, and held Jordan Valley to 35 net yards in the second quarter. Brody Turner scored on a 19-yard run to open the second quarter, and after the Badgers recovered an onside kick, Turner had a 49-yard scoring run that brought Powder Valley to within four points.

We realized what needed to be done was to come back together as a team, Stanfield said.

The turning point came near the end of the third quarter. Todd Baxters punt pinned Jordan Valley at its 1-yard line, and while the Mustangs got a first down, their subsequent punt gave Powder great field position. Baxter had a 3-yard touchdown run on that drive that put his team up for good, 30-28.

Riley Martin added a 10-yard touchdown run with four minutes left. Turner capped Powders scoring with a 65-yard run less than a minute later one play after Baxter recovered a Jordan Valley fumble.

Turner had four touchdowns and ran the ball 15 times for 192 yards. Baxter scored twice and gained 90 yards on 15 carries. He also completed six of 14 passes for 67 yards.

Freese finished with 171 yards on 34 carries. He also had two pass completions and scored on Jordan Valleys final touchdown drive.
