Panthers bring home title
HILLSBORO — Joe Griffin and Kyle Johnson put on an offensive clinic, and the Imbler defense made just enough stops to bring home the Class 1A state championship Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium.
The Panthers were making their first appearance in the championship game since 2009, a loss. Imbler wouldn’t be denied this time, beating Lowell 88-76.
Griffin ran for 335 yards on 25 carries with four touchdowns, and finished with four receptions for 139 yards and three touchdowns. That alone would be an impressive day, but Griffin didn’t stop there. He returned kicks of 72 and 66 yards for touchdowns. His nine touchdowns was one shy of tying the national record.
Johnson completed 7-of-12 passing for 167 yards and five touchdowns.
It’s the second state championship for the Imbler Panthers, the first one coming in 2008.
