DIGGING DEEP: Imbler's Kacie Merrigan digs an attack by a Helix hitter during a three-game sweep Tuesday. - The Observer/PAUL HARDER IMBLER — Tuesday’s contest at Imbler looked eerily like the 2008 state championship game.
The Panthers volleyball team cruised past Helix in three games.
Last season, Imbler defeated the Grizzlies in four games to claim its first state volleyball title.
“We were expecting a good match,” Panthers coach Jennifer Teeter said. “Our focus was to play our style no matter what. I think the girls did a great job of that tonight.”
Imbler dominated the net during the 25-18, 25-12, 25-14 sweep.
Demetria Thompson and Sarah Bowers each finished with 10 kills.
Thompson also cleaned up on defense, recording nine blocks.
Imbler used its back row to cause confusion with attacks from Stephanie Anthony and McKenzie Tally. It’s been a process in the works since early this season.
“It adds another element to our game,” Teeter said. “The girls have been working very hard to get better at it. It’s nice to see the improvements we’ve made since earlier this season.”
Reva West added 19 assists, and finished 13-of-14 serving.
Imbler finished the match serving 96 percent. As a team they committed three errors with seven aces.
The Panthers will head to Sherman for a tournament Friday and finish the weekend at the Pine Eagle tourney Saturday.
