Powder Valley handles Cove, 64-45

MINI-ODEN: Powder Valley’s Jordan Pratt had a big night on Friday finishing with 13 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks. - The Observer/ PAUL HARDER
UNION — Every team in Oregon’s Class 1A should take notice that the Powder Valley boys basketball team is for real this season.

The Badgers dominated every aspect of Friday’s game against fellow Old Oregon League opponent, Cove. Powder Valley routed the helpless Leopards, 64-45.

“I thought we did pretty well for our first game,” Powder Valley head coach Kyle Dixon said. “I think there is some stuff we need to work on. I am very happy with our guys.

“I thought we came out and played a good first half and got a little lazy in the second half.”

The Badgers jumped out to an early 10-0 lead to start the game and led 17-5 after the first quarter.

Powder Valley took a 34-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Jordan Pratt led the Badgers with a double-double in Powder Valley’s first game of the season.

The senior had 13 points, four blocks and a game-high 16 rebounds.

“For the first game of the season we came out a little raw,” Pratt said. “Luckily for us everything came out alright and we got the win.

“I thought I played alright, better on defense than on offense, but I’m working on that.”

Pratt scored nine of his 13 points and got 10 of his 16 rebounds in the second half.

“(Jordan) brings a lot to our team,” Dixon said. “We didn’t give him the ball enough. Defensively the way he blocks shots, he is just dominant.”

Powder Valley’s Trenton Dixon finished with a game-high 23 points after scoring 11 in the first quarter.

The Badgers pulled out the win despite committing 28 turnovers.

Jered Witty led Cove with 15 points.

Saturday, the Leopards play Union in the third-place game at 2:45 p.m. Powder Valley advances to the Union Lions’ Club Tournament championships against Crane at 6 p.m.
