Powder Valley senior selected as the player of the year by the Old Oregon League coaches
BAKER CITY — When the coaches from Joseph, Cove, Pine Eagle, Wallowa, Imbler and Powder Valley got together recently, they decided on the all-league team.
They had a question to answer.
Who would be the player of the year for a 1A league that seems to perpetually put teams in the state tournament?
Ali Abrego was the choice this year.
The league’s first team included Danika McIntosh and Malia Mills of Imbler, along with sisters Bri Thatcher and Maddison Thatcher of Pine Eagle and Powder Valley’s Alexandra Colton.
Bailee Allen of Powder Valley joined a trio of Wallowa players on the second team. Morgan Waters, Kristyn Young and Taylor Harshfield dominated the second squad, while Hailey Hulse of Cove and Emma Bowers of Imbler made the list.
Pine Eagle’s Jamie Butler and Lena Carr were named on the honorable mention squad, as was Cove’s Kindra Moore and Molly DelCurto, Joseph’s Breanna Gibson and Sidney Cooney, along with Imbler’s Ally Fullerton.
Coach of the year
Imbler’s Barry Bowers was named as the league’s coach of the year after guiding the Lady Panthers to a league title with a 9-1 record. The Imbler squad lost to Pine Eagle by one point for the only blemish on their league record.
After going undefeated in the district tournament, the Lady Panthers had built their season record to 18-4 going into the state playoffs.
