Panthers push past Cougars, move on to semifinals today
The Imbler girls basketball team used defense to pull away from Wallowa in the opening round of the La Grande Optimist Tournament Thursday at Quinn Coliseum.
The Panthers led 13-7 after one quarter, but held the Cougars to one basket in the second quarter, fueling a 48-31 win.
Lexxe Robertson came off the bench to score 11 points for Imbler, while Emma Bowers scored eight of her 11 points in the first half. Katie Barry added eight points.
Morgan Waters tried to keep Wallowa in the game, scoring eight points in the third quarter, finishing with a team-high 12 points. Taylor Hashfield added nine points.
The Panthers will meet Joseph in the semifinals at 6 p.m. today. Wallowa played Monument/Dayville at 8 a.m. this morning.
Eagles win in OT
Joseph needed an extra quarter, but outlasted Monument/Dayville at the La Grande Optimist Tournament Thursday during a 38-31 win.
The Eagles girls basketball team had a seven-point lead late in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers came all the way back to force the extra period.
Breeana Gibson and Hailee McClure led the Eagles with 11 and nine points, respectively.
The Eagles will play Imbler at 6 p.m. tonight in the semifinals. Dayville/Monument played Wallowa at 8 a.m. this morning.
Bobcats race past Cove
The Union starters got things going in the opening half against Cove, and the bench kept up the scoring pace in the second half during the opening round of the La Grande Optimist Tournament Thursday.
Keesha Sarman had a game-high 18 points during a 62-24 win, advancing the Bobcats into the semifinals.
Sophomore Ellie Wells added 12 points, while Sarah Good chipped in 10 points.
Union built a 33-13 lead at the half, and the bench started filtering in for the Bobcats added 29 points in the second half.
The Leopards were led by Hannah Duby with seven points. MiKayla Murchison added five points.
Cove played Powder Valley at 11 a.m. in the consolation round. Union will play Pilot Rock in the semifinals at 3 p.m. today.
Badgers fall to Rockets
Alexandra Colton scored 17 points against Pilot Rock, but it wasn’t enough for the Powder Valley girls basketball team to pull out a win at the La Grande Optimist Tournament Thursday.
Colton scored eight of her points in the fourth quarter, but the Rockets held on for a 48-36 win.
Pilot Rock jumped out to a 22-10 lead at the half led by Jessie Doherty, who scored eight of her 10 points in the opening two quarters.
Sally Blair and McKenzie Hampton each scored six points for the Badgers.
Maddison Dave and Britteny Taylor scored 15 and 10 points, respectively, for the Rockets.
The Badgers hit the court at 11 a.m. this morning against Cove. The Rockets will play Union at 3 p.m. today.
