Prep boys basketball: Panthers, Badgers finish tied for first place

IMBLER — The Imbler boys basketball team had no problem cruising to a senior night win against Wallowa Friday.

Led by a strong start, the Panthers cruised to a 66-24 win.

Imbler jumped out to a 18-4 lead after one quarter, and pushed the lead to 40-12 by haltime.

Senior Kyle Johnson finished with 12 points for Imbler, and he added seven rebounds. Eli Bowers scored 12 points, while Trace Vancleave added eight points.

Wallowa was led by Cole Hafer with 10 points.

Wallowa opens the Old Oregon League postseason tournament against Pine Eagle Thursday.

Imbler, who won the top seed with a cion flip, will play the winner of that game Friday.

Badgers cruise past Cove

COVE —The Powder Valley boys basketball team played the role of spoiler very well Friday night.

Cove’s senior night didn’t end well with the Badgers cruising to an 81-27 win.

Powder Valley opened the game with a 22-0 run and never looked back.

Jason Benites led the Badgers with 23 points. Quin Stephens added 22 points, scoring 10 in the third quarter. 

Cove was led by Brandan McGilvray with eight points.

Cove will play Joseph in the opening round of the Old Oregon League tournament Thursday. Powder Valley will play the winner of that game Friday.

Bobcats split final games

UNION — Playing the No. 1 team in the state on senior night didn’t end well for the Union boys basketball team despite a strong start.

The Bobcats lost to Irrigon 69-40 Saturday.

Union kept close to the Knights, but a 6-1 run late in the second qaurter gave the vistors a 35-28 halftime lead.

Irrigon kept the run going in the third quarter, scoring the first six points, grabbing a 41-28 lead and cruised the rest of the game.

Senior Ty Coon finished the night with 13 points. Cortin Nowak and Chase Houck finished with nine and eight points, respectively.

Irrigon was led by Anthony Landeros, who finished with 18 points.

Coon helped the Bobcats pick up a 78-75 win in overtime against Grant Union Friday.

Coon scored five of his 16 points in the overtime period. 

J.D. Graves led the Bobcats with 17 points, while Johnny Kennon finished with 15 points.

Union will play play Stanfield in the opening round of the Blue Mountain Conference tournament at 2:45 p.m. Friday in Hermiston.

Enterprise drops a pair

ENTERPRISE — Despite a game-high 26 points by Damon Greenshield, the Enterprise boys basketball team lost to Grant Union 69-63 Saturday. 

About midway through the fourth, Grant Union threw a bad pass that was caught by Greenfield. He turned, collided with another Grant Union player, and had the foul called on him causing him to foul out of the game. 

In spite of losing their star player at a critical moment of the game, Enterprise head coach Jeff Micka said they played the best they have played all year. 

For the Outlaws David Ribich ended the night with 13, hitting 3-of-5 3-pointers. Kadon Lathrop finished with nine points. 

Grant Union’s Kody Nelson finished with 16 points. Wyatt Weaver and Mitch Moulton scored 15 points each.

The Outlaws lost to Heppner 50-26 Friday. 

According to the Enterprise boys’ head coach Jeff Micka, they missed the first four or five shots and that set the tone for the rest for the game. 

“We played hard and put a lot of effort into the game, but we couldn’t get anything to fall,” Micka said. 

The top scorers for Enterprise were Greenshields, with 14 points; Lathrop, with seven points; and Ribich, with three points. 

For Heppner, Brian Rill and Logan Grieb finished with 17 points each. 

Huskies drop final two

ELGIN — Elgin lost at home to Heppner 57-26 Saturday. 

Head coach Casey Halgarth said they did not have an answer to Heppner’s Logan Grieb. 

“We practiced hard all week, but couldn’t put that into the game,” Halgarth said. 

Jake Burgess of Elgin finshed the game with eight points and Curtis Little scored seven. 

Grieb ended the night with 31 points and Ross Cutsforth had seven points. 

Elgin’s boys basketball lost to Stanfield 73-38 Friday. 

Casey Halgarth said his team never got off of the bus. 

“We had a great game plan but we had butter fingers all night,” Halgarth said. 

Burgess scored a game-high 16 points while Curtis Little hit two 3-pointers and finished the game with eight points. 

For Stanfield, Izac Gonzalez and Dylan Grogan scored 15 points apiece.
