Prepare for Little League invasion

By The Observer

Pioneer Park will be home to hundreds of Little Leaguers for a week starting Saturday.

The District 3 Little League Softball Tournament will occupy the parks Sam Marcum and Restroom fields for seven days, bringing 25 teams to competition for divisions from ages 9-10 to 15-16.

The tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with the Pendleton and Wallowa Valley majors (11-12) teams facing off at Marcum Field and the Baker and Wallowa Valley minors (9-10) teams playing at Restroom Field.

Nine games will be played Saturday, 10 on Sunday, seven on Monday and Tuesday and five on Wednesday.

The championship games in the double-elimination tournament will be played Thursday; times will be announced later. If necessary, second championship games will be played Friday.

La Grande Little League has three teams entered. The minors team will play Pilot Rock at 4 p.m. Saturday at Restroom Field while the majors team meets Athena at the same time at neighboring Marcum Field. La Grande juniors (13-14) team plays at 6 p.m. Sunday at Marcum Field against the winner of Saturdays Pilot RockBaker game.

In preparation for the tournament, scoreboards and dugouts have been added to both fields. Boy Scout Chase Miller built the dugouts at Marcum Field as his Eagle Scout project, and La Grande Little League and the Optimist Club helped build the dugouts at Restroom Field.

The scoreboards, which stand between the two fields, were donated by the local Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and were installed last week by Little League members.

Local all-stars are listed below. Lists for the Union County juniors and seniors (15-16) teams and the Wallowa Valley seniors team were unavailable by press time and will be published later.
