PORTLAND La Grande Rain Roofing needed all of its three home runs Thursday.

The American Legion baseball team got homers from Drew Fischer, Tanner Abel and Dollen Stroup in a 13-11 come-from-behind victory over Sherwood in the first round of the Class A State Tournament at David Douglas High School.

Two of those blasts came in a seven-run fifth inning. That followed a four-run fifth in which Sherwood took a 7-4 lead.

We had a bunch of errors; thats why they scored a bunch of their runs, La Grande manager Dave Mellinger said.

Fortunately for La Grande (22-9), it shook off the bad inning and immediately responded with its best at the plate.

Ty Mellinger walked to start things off, then Stroup homered to cut the lead to 7-6. La Grande loaded the bases before Zach Glasser hit a two-run double to give his team the lead. Fischer followed with a three-run homer.

We just said, Hey, were stuck in a jam here, lets get out of it, La Grande coach Wes McAllaster said. Were obviously pleased with how they responded to it.

La Grande pitcher Adam Kleck went the distance, striking out seven and giving up eight hits and six walks. In Sherwoods fifth, however, he had problems fielding bunts. Sherwood had no hits in the inning.

We could not make a play, Mellinger said.

Kleck had control problems early in the nine-inning game.

Early, he was all wild, McAllaster said, then he settled down. Except for that inning, he settled down pretty well.

La Grande advances to play Canby at 12:30 this afternoon, and the winner of that game will play at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Rain Roofing got off to a strong start, scoring three runs in the first inning. Glasser led off with a double, Fischer doubled him home and Abel hit a two-run homer, his 10th of the season.

Three batters, three runs.

Sherwood tied the game in the second inning, but La Grande went ahead 4-3 in the fourth when Glasser scored on an error.

Rain Roofing added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh. Klecks two-out single scored Shane Slover in the sixth. Stroups single scored Abel in the seventh.
