RODEO STARTS FRIDAY NIGHT WITH BULL-A-RAMA

ELGIN — The fifth annual Mark Nichols Memorial Bull-A-Rama starts the annual Elgin Stampede Friday evening.

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo has two performances, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, but the rodeo activities include Friday's bull riding, Saturday's slack and the annual suicide race Sunday afternoon before the main show.

The bull riding starts at 7 p.m. Friday at the Stampede grounds along Highway 82 south of town.

A dance featuring Coltrain will follow in the Stampede Hall. Coltrain will also perform after Saturday evening's rodeo.

Saturday starts with rodeo slack at 9 a.m. at the arena. The Kiddies Parade runs through town starting at 10 a.m. The evening rodeo starts at 7.

Sunday features a cowboy Christian service at 6:30 a.m. at the grounds. The grand parade is at 11 a.m., with the Queen's Luncheon following at the Stampee Hall.

The suicide race is at 1:50 p.m., and the rodeo follows at 2.

The Flying 5/Big Bend Rodeo Company is again providing the stock, and Steve Kenyon of Pendleton will announce for the second year.

Also back in their second year are bullfighters Bill Hamilton and Mike Gotham, and clown/specialty act Randee Munns returns for his 10th year.

Matt Wolcott of La Grande won last year's bull-a-rama, while Russ Smith of Elgin won the suicide race.

Sponsors have added $2,000 per event for the rodeo this year.
