Reddington off to fast start

By Casey Kellas

The Observer

EUGENE — Cove’s Morgan Reddington had a big opening day at the 1A state track meet Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Reddington took second place in the long jump with a jump of 16 feet, 7-3/4-inches. She also put herself in position to bring home medals in the 100- and 200-meter dashes with top finishes in the prelims.

Reddington ran the 100-meter dash in 12.89 seconds Thursday to take the top time into Friday’s championship run.

She then ran the 200 meters in 27.45 seconds to be the top seed for Friday’s finale.

“I’m just trying to save something for (Friday),” Reddington said. “Hopefully I’ll do well.”

Reddington said her times in the 100 and 200 are right around where she expected, but she is hoping Friday will bring some faster marks.

“Yeah, they’re OK,” she said. “If everything goes well, I should have a good lane assignment (Friday).”

The long jump and 100 meters were scheduled close to each other, so Reddington had to do some double duty in the early afternoon.

“Whenever I run the 100 meters my long jumps are never as good. So, that was a little bit hard after my first jump because I basically knew I wasn’t going to be as good after that,” she said.

But she is still in position to finish at the top of the podium in two events.

“Hopefully I can take the title in the (200). The 100 is going to be really tough because the girl in second is right behind me. So, we’ll see,” Reddington said.

Reddington’s teammate Hannah Brazil also had a good showing Thursday. The junior finished in third place in the 3,000 meters, running a time of 12:11.25.

Powder Valley’s Ali Abrego finished third in the high jump after clearing 4 feet, 10 inches. Imbler’s Jessica Snider placed eighth with a heighth of 4-06.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Emma Bowers of Imbler finished sixth with a time of 17.99 seconds, while Powder Valley’s Amy Eubanks was seventh with a time of 17.21.

Eubanks also placed 10th in the 300 hurdles with a time of 55.79.

Cove sits third in the 1A girls standings with 14 points, while Ione leads with 23 points. Powder Valley is 12th (six points) and Imbler is 25th (one point).

In the high jump, Union’s Stormy Bullard placed second (5-01), while Elgin’s Stormy Silver took seventh (4-06).

Union freshman off to good start

Union freshman Trevor Verhelst opened the 2A state track meet Thursday with a third place in the 100 meters (11.43) and a fourth place in the 200 meters and sits in position to bring home hardware.

Verhelst will compete in the championship races today.

“I loved it,” the freshman said. “My coaches told me not to try too hard because it’s prelims — finish in the top three and you’re fine — and that’s what I did.”

And even though this is his first trip to Hayward Field, Verhelst is thinking big today.

“They’re pretty high,” Verhelst said of his expectations. “Because I’m a freshman I didn’t know what to expect. But it’s been a fun experience, that’s for sure.”

Enterprise’s Alex Tyler also opened the meet with some high marks.

Tyler took second in the 400 meter prelims with a time of 52.29, and he placed second in the 200 with a time of 23.01. He will compete in the championship races today.
