Registration starts for Optimist football
The Optimistic Tackle Football Program is accepting registration for the fall season.
Pre-registration is $40 before Aug. 17 and $50 after, payable to Optimist Football. The price does not include medical insurance, which is to be provided by the parents. Registration scholarships are available.
Equipment will be issued Aug. 21 for eighth-graders, Aug. 22 for seventh- and eighth-graders and Aug. 23 for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at 6 to 8 p.m. at Pioneer Field near the Optimist Concession Stand. Practices start at 5 p.m. Aug. 27 and the season will end around Oct. 23.
This year, in cooperation with the La Grande School District, eighth-grade football will be part of the La Grande Middle School.
The La Grande Optimist Club will provide equipment for sixth- through eighth-graders.
There will only be one team for the eighth-graders, which will compete against area schools. Practice for eighth-graders will be at the La Grande High School practice field following school and the La Grande School District will provide a coach.
Three to four mixed sixth- and seventh-grade teams will be provided by the Optimists. Each team will have approximately 20 players so all participants have the opportunity to play. Practice for the sixth- and seventh-graders will be at Pioneer Park.
Players must provide their own socks, supporter, mouth guard and shoes. Mouth guards are available from the Optimist Club for $1 each or can be purchased from local merchants. Canvas or leather shoes are acceptable, but the cleats must be rubber. The shoes may be either lowcuts or hightops. Official team jerseys will be issued to all players, along with a T-shirt with a sponsor name printed on it that the players may keep.
Each player needs a physical from within the past two years. A copy needs to be on file with the Optimists. You must arrange a physical through your family physician at your expense.
Dr. Gregg Densmore and a team of doctors will provide physicals for $15 from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 16 at Mt. Valley Therapy at 1802 Fourth St. The money collected for the physicals will be donated back to the program. The physical is good for middle school activities so please make extra copies for the school.
If a child is unable to attend the Aug. 16 physical, please schedule the childs physical as soon as possible. Physicals must be completed before the child is eligible to play.
