SCHUFT, LESTER REACH DOUBLES SEMIS
CORVALLIS Greg Schuft and Tyler Lester, La Grande's second-seeded doubles team, advanced to this morning's semifinals after the first day of the OSAA-U.S. Bank Class 3A/2A/1A Tennis State Championships Friday.
They will meet a familiar tandem Josh Christensen and Nick Bablj of Ontario one more time.
Schuft and Lester defeated them in the semifinals at the District 4-3A/2A/1A Tournament 7-6 (1-7), 7-5, 6-4.
On Friday, Schuft and Lester made quick work of Shane Clifton and Jesse Belyea of Echo and Eriks Berzins and Tucker Page of Oregon Episcopal School. The Echo duo lost 6-4, 6-0, and Schuft and Lester beat the OES pair 7-5, 6-2.
In the other doubles semifinal, Jeremy Babener and Shane Kapral of Catlin Gabel will be up against Sean Hart and Kip Nelson of Vale.
La Grande singles players Haley Hines and John Woodfield both lost their first matches Friday and fell into the consolation round.
Hines defeated Anna Valverde of North Marion in consolation. She faced Mollie Rankin of Madras in the consolation semifinals this morning.
Rankin beat Hines earlier in the season, 6-4, 6-3.
Sam Coy of Central eliminated Woodfield in consolation.
Scores for the consolation matches were not available.
