SENIORS RULE FOR LA GRANDE HIGH

By Raenelle Kwock

Observer Staff Writer

The four seniors on the La Grande girls basketball team Lauren Sternfeld, Karli Nebeker, Shalece Hibbert and Chelsea Long left their mark on their final regular season home game Friday.

Sternfeld, who tore her ACL during the season, came in for the first series and drilled the first two points for La Grande.

From then on, the girls were on an emotional high and could not lose, La Grande coach Isaac Williams said after they pounded McLoughlin 78-28.

With the win, La Grande moves on to next months Class 3A state tournament as the Greater Oregon League champion.

Nebeker was La Grandes second-leading scorer with 17 points.

I was just playing, having fun, she said.

Hibbert finished with six points, while Long had four points.

I was a little nervous at first, Long said. Im happy how it turned out.

Long said the team wins at home because it works hard, players push each other and they do not take teams for granted.

I was real excited that I was able to finish the year off, and I put my all into practices and games, Long said.

Junior Christie Weaver was La Grandes leading scorer with 22 points.

Erin Harris led Mac-Hi with 11 points.

Seniors go out in style

The La Grande boys also sent their seniors off with a win Friday against Mac-Hi.

All of our seniors played really well, La Grande coach Aaron Mills said.

Mills said the team wanted to send the seniors off right, and they did after a 74-50 victory.

La Grande and Ontario are tied for second place in the GOL. If Ontario beats Vale today, there will be a playoff between La Grande and Ontario at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Baker City.

Its all business now, Mills said. We cant slip up the rest of the season.

The seniors had fun, especially Greg Schuft, who thrives on fast breaks.

Our fast break was really good tonight, Mills said.

Most of Schufts team-high 24 points came off the break. He scored 14 points in the first half.

Senior Tyler Lester was the second-leading scorer with 17 points. Senior Tanner Mellinger ended up with four points. Senior Tim Mollerstrom started the game. Senior Steve Larson did not play.
