A slow start didnt keep La Grande from winning its Eastern Oregon League opener Saturday.

The Tiger girls soccer team scored only once in the opening half, but turned on the offense in the second half en route to a 5-0 win over The Dalles at La Grande Middle School Field.

Alexis Baum headed in a goal off a Cathy Herrmann corner kick 14 minutes into the contest, representing the only score in the first half.

In the first half, (The Dalles) played some good defense, but in the second half we ran away with it, La Grande coach Alex Steenstra said.

La Grande (2-1) wore the Indians down with its precise passing and various ways of scoring.

Nicole Lewis intercepted a goalie kick four minutes into the second half, dribbled in and scored.

She tried the same maneuver seven minutes later, but was tackled. Chelsea Long took the penalty kick and scored.

Baum took a cross pass that ricocheted off a The Dalles defender and into the goal in the 22nd minute, and Shalece Hibbert scored the final goal in the final minute of the contest off a pass from Karli Nebeker.

La Grande outshot the Indians 30-1, prompting Steenstra to say, We need to work on our finishing a little bit.

Steenstra was pleased with the play of Caitlin Schoenfelder. She had a lot of great runs, she was just unlucky not to score.

Scoring off a corner kick was also a plus.

Weve been working on scoring off a corner kick all week in practice, Steenstra said.

La Grande travels to Boardman for a league contest with Riverside Monday.
