IMBLER — The Grant Union Prospectors swept the Imbler Panthers 25-18, 25-16, 25-11 in Wapiti League volleyball Friday.

Even though the score doesn't indicate a close Game 1, it was back-and-forth before the Prospectors pulled away to win it.

Sierra Tristan's service ace gave the Panthers a 16-14 lead. Two Panther errors tied it up at 16-16. Another Panther error and Prospector ace increased the lead to 18-16.

The Prospectors served long, giving Grant Union an 18-17 lead, then the Prospectors took a 19-17 lead off a Panther dig that went out of play.

Whitney Simmons hit the ball into the net to pull the Panthers to within 19-18.

The Prospectors finally gave themselves some breathing room at 21-18 after the Panthers were unable to come up with saves. The Prospectors closed it out on a 4-0 run.

In Game 2, the Panthers trailed by five points most of the way and were unable to mount a rally.

The Prospectors jumped out to a 6-1 lead, then a 12-7 advantage. Eventually the Prospectors increased their lead to 15-10, before taking a commanding 18-11 lead.

The Prospectors went on a 9-0 scoring run midway through Game 3 to take a 13-4 lead and never looked back.

Imbler coach Jennifer Teeter said the Panthers improved defensively. She said the Panthers did a better job blocking.

Kayla Ritter had 16 blocks, Stacey McKinnis had 14 and Chelsea Hughes 13.

Ritter, Hughes, Mandy Griffin and Shelby Warren served 100 percent.

Tawnie Overton and Hannah Hall had four kills each.

Teeter said the Prospectors are a solid, tough team. She added that the Panthers have some areas to work on.

The Panthers are playing in the La Grande Invitational today.
