POWDER'S STEPHEN LEWIS IS PREP AWARD NOMINEE

PORTLAND Stephen Lewis, a 2001 graduate of Powder Valley High School, is a nominee for the Johnny Carpenter Prep Athlete of the Year award at the Oregon Sports Awards banquet Sunday.

As a senior at the North Powder school, Lewis won the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs at the Class 1A state track and field meet for the second-straight year, leading the Badgers to their fifth-consecutive state title.

Lewis is one of 10 male athletes nominated for the Carpenter award, which also recognizes a top female prep athlete.

The award is one of several presented at the banquet, which includes the Bill Hayward Amateur Athletes of the Year and Harry Glickman Pro Athletes of the Year awards.

Former Portland Trail Blazers announcer Bill Schonely will emcee the event, with special guest former NBA All-Star Charles Barkley.

Eastern Oregon hammer thrower Leah Merrell was previously announced as a nominee for the Rutschman Small College Athlete of the Year award.
