SWIM CLUB HOPES TO BOLSTER RANKS
Young children restless for a new sport might consider joining the La Grande Swim Club.
Were looking for new swimmers, (and) new parents to get involved, La Grande Swim Club head coach Jess Roberts said.
Roberts hopes an influx of younger children will make the team bigger and better, even though more than half of the team is not competitive because they are young.
Were trying to create some newness to it, Roberts said.
Pre-registration for the new term is from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Friday at Veterans Memorial Pool. An informal intersquad meet consisting of children finishing the term will take place at the same time.
Swimming is one of the few sports where young children can continue to later ages, he said.
Children between the ages of 4 to 18 join by signing up. There are classes for all swimming levels.
From September to May, the team travels to a championship or regional meet. Most of the competition is from late June to early August. There are eight swim meets in the summer, one of them hosted by the La Grande club. District championships conclude the summer competition.
Were much more competitive in the summer, Roberts said.
The team lost the district championship by 20 points last summer.
Roberts said the team is poised this summer to win the Eastern Oregon District, adding that it has been close to 20 years since the team won the district title.
In addition, he said, La Grande is known as a smaller team and for having quality swimmers.
