Seymour wins district

PRINEVILLE — Daniel Seymour saved his best for last and the La Grande boys golf team will have a chance to compete for a third straight state title.

The senior battled Baker’s Brandon Ellwanger for two playoff holes before eventually being crowned the Greater Oregon League district champion Tuesday at Medow Lakes Golf Course in Prineville.

The Tigers finished second as a team, posting a score of 708, just four strokes back of first-place Baker (704) to qualify for the state
tournament.

Seymour and Ellwanger both finished with a 164 to send Tuesday’s tournament to extra holes. Both players bogeyed the 18th hole.

But it was Seymour who came up with a par on the Par-3 17th hole while his counterpart put in a bogey, giving Seymour the district
championship.

“I’m so happy for Danny,” LHS head coach Ron Evans said.

“He’s played for me for four years, so to see him play so well there, it’s great.”

Jake Girard shot a 168 to finish in fourth place, while Craig Wallace carded a 184 and both James Laurence and Andrew Branen carded 193s.

“All of the kids played really well,” Evans said.

“They played really smart. There is a lot of water on that course — nearly every hole — you really have to play target golf.”

La Grande sat in third place on Monday after posting a 362.

Ridgeview had a 355 and Baker sat at 357.

But La Grande made the charge on Tuesday to
move into second place and secure a spot in the state
tournament.

“We were down (on Monday), but we knew Ridgeview played really good on day one,” Evans said.

“We didn’t expect them to play that well (Tuesday), but you never know.”

Evans thought his team was going to catch Baker at one point on Tuesday.

“I really thought we were going to get them. But to finish where we did, Baker has been beating us all year by about 20 strokes or so,” Evans said.

Ridgeview’s Jimi Seely placed third overall individually, shooting a 167.

Charley Clark of Baker shot a 172 to place fifth.

In the team scoring, Ridgeview was 17 strokes back of La Grande to place third.

Crook Country (749) took fourth place, McLoughlin (754) placed fifth and Ontario (829) finished sixth to round out the team scoring.

Now La Grande will try for the three-peat at the home course of the University of Oregon, Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell.

“Hopefully we can go down there and do something,” Evans said.

“The kids are excited, they’re going to have a good time. That’s a real golf course. It’s really nice.”

The tournament starts Monday and will wrap up on Tuesday.
