Subway A’s cruise past Pendleton

The place to be Tuesday evening was Optimist Field. The smell of hot dogs wafted in the air, the temperature was perfect complemented by sunny skies and ding of baseballs hitting metal bats could be heard — a lot.

The La Grande Subway A’s and Pendleton’s Hodgen Distributing legion teams combined for 30 runs off of 28 hits in a nine-inning offensive showcase.

The Subway A’s prevailed when the day was over, 18-12.

“We told the umpire before the game we were concerned we only had nine guys and they had 11 and we were worried how aggressive we would be,” manager Eric Yundt said. “After the game he said, ‘30 runs total and you were worried about the offense’?”

“Coming off a weekend where we played four games in three days and we played so well, I think today was tough. We made some errors early we usually don’t make. But we hit the ball well and I thought we played just fine.”

After falling behind 3-1 going into the bottom of the second inning, the A’s came alive. Kole Stein began with a leadoff double, followed by deep singles by Gavin Baynes and Woody Stuckoff.

Austin Woodward then cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the centerfield wall.

“It felt pretty good at the plate today,” Woodward said. “They just kept pitching fast balls to me. They left a couple balls up for me to hit.

“This isn’t a bad summer job. There’s nothing else better to do than play baseball.”

The upcoming junior at Union High School had one of his normal days on the diamond, a home run with two doubles.

“He not only had a monster day today, he’s had a monster summer so far,” Yundt said. “He’s just a heck of an athlete. He’s fun to watch on the mound, behind the plate, in the field, he’s a joy to watch.

“He hasn’t disappointed any of us. He swings the bat so well. The main thing is he is a great kid to coach. He has a great attitude. I wish I could coach him at every sport.”

The A’s scored seven runs in the decisive second inning that set the tone for the rest of the game.

La Grande’s Josh Yundt did most of the work in the field in the top of the fifth inning. The second basemen began the inning with a nonchalant over- the-shoulder catch in shallow centerfield.

Then he ended the inning by scooping up a grounder, tagged out a runner passing in front of him and threw to first for the double play.

After Pendleton made an attempt at a rally with three runs in the top of the eighth, the A’s Grant Marcum hit a three-run home run in the bottom half of the inning.

La Grande will host The Dalles in a seven-inning double header today beginning at 4 p.m.
