Subway A's finish strong at Hermiston tournament

HERMISTON — The Subway A’s American Legion baseball team found a little more bounce for its step during the closing games at the Hermiston tournament.

Playing 13 games in eight days prior to the tournament, La Grande looked a little sluggish in its opening games.

“It took a while for the boys to get their feet under them,” Manager Eric Yundt said. “We just came out flat, and couldn’t get a hit to fall.”

The Subway A’s fell 7-1 in the tournament opener to the host team, Hermiston.

Pendleton brought its AAA team to the A tournament, and it showed against La Grande.

Pendleton cruised to a 14-2 win.

Carson Miller led La Grande with a solo home run.

“It was a good test for the boys,” Yundt said. “We need to be ready to play whoever is on the other side of the lines.”

Saturday, the Subway A’s stopped its slide against Heppner, picking up a 16-4 win.

J.R. Masters earned the win on the mound.

Austin Woodward kept the momentum going. The right-hander picked up a 6-1 decision on the mound against John Day.

La Grande closed out the tournament with an 11-2 win against Stanfield.

“It was a great job by the kids to rebound after a rough start,” Yundt said. “It was a team effort on Saturday and Sunday. We didn’t start off very well, but the boys found their form.

“Everyone contributed to the effort. I don’t think I could single any player out on offense or defense. All the kids made plays when they had to.”
