NORTH POWDER — Size mattered in North Powder Saturday during a battle for the top spot in the Old Oregon League.

Wallowa knocked off Powder Valley 71-58 to improve to 13-2 overall, and 8-0 in league play.

The Cougars boys basketball team changed its defense to shut down Trenton Dixon.

It didn’t work.

The Badger guard still managed to score 27 points. Dixon had seven in the first half with one field goal.

“We worked on the defense a little bit in the last game,” Wallowa head coach Warren Wilson said. “We wanted to try and slow Trenton down. The boys came out and did a great job of playing a great team game.

“It helped us jump out to the lead. We switched to a man-to-man later in the game, and they just chipped away at the lead.”

Still, Wallowa sandwiched Ronald Gladden, Mark Jamerson and Ian Parks in between two guards to frustrate Powder Valley.

The long reach in the middle caused turnovers and altered shots.

That led to a 25-14 advantage for the Cougars after one quarter.

The chipping process began late in the second quarter.

Back-to-back three pointers helped trim the lead to 36-24 before halftime.

Kandle opened the second half the same way he ended the first, with a 3-pointer to trim the lead to nine points.

Then Jake Johnson took over.

“We knew this was a big game,” Johnson said. “Playing in this gym is pretty tough. It feels like everyone is right on top of you.

“The goal was to prove we belong at the top of the league, and we did that.”

Johnson scored the next eight points for Wallowa to push the lead to 44-27.

That push took the game out of reach. Powder Valley pulled within 11 points in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get any closer.

Wallowa will host Imbler at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The Badgers will host Cove at 7:30 p.m.

On Friday, Wallowa took care of Joseph 74-35.

Johnson led the Cougars with 22 points.

The Eagles fell behind quickly, trailing 36-12 at the half.

Tyler Harshfield added 16 points.

Trevor Lewis led Joseph with 13 points. Ian Baynes added 10 points.
