TIGER BASEBALL SPLITS A PAIR
The La Grande baseball boys went up against dust storms, gusting winds, horizontal rain, extra innings and a 4A team from Hermiston Tuesday, and came out of it with grit in their eyes, wet uniforms and a split.
La Grande won the first game 7-5, then lost the second in eight innings 8-6.
That first game had to be delayed for a few minutes because gusting winds made it impossible for umpires and players to see.
"It was like the Dust Bowl in Kansas," said coach Dennis Young.
La Grande erupted for five runs in the second inning, with the big blow delivered by Trent Evins, who hit a two-out, two-run triple.
Nik Lequerica drove in two runs and went five innings on the mound to pick up the win. Freshman Jordan Lanman pitched a couple of scoreless innings to pick up the save.
In the second game, the wind just got worse, at one point, blowing pitcher Derek Moore's hat to the first-base line in mid-pitch.
This time, La Grande fell behind 5-1, but the Tigers battled back to tie the game at 6-6 after seven innings.
Young said it took a bad break in the bottom of the seventh to keep La Grande from winning. With the Tigers down 6-4 and two runners on base, Chase Miller laid down a sacrifice bunt. Hermiston threw the ball away and as the ball rolled into La Grande's bullpen, all three base runners were speeding around the bases.
However, the ball squirted under the right field fence and out of play.
"Had the ball not gone out of play, I'm sure all three players would have scored, and the game would have been over," said Young.
As it was, La Grande was allowed one run to make the score 6-5. Lanman hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
In the eighth, Hermiston scored two runs on one hit, as the Bulldogs got the benefit of a couple of wild pitches and a hit batsman.
At the Nampa Tournament this weekend, La Grande went 1-3. The Tigers lost to Skyview 5-3, beat Nampa 9-7, lost to Capitol 16-2 and was nipped by Vallivue 4-3.
La Grande next plays at home at 3 p.m. Thursday against Pendleton. This is a single game.
