BAKER CITY — The La Grande boys' tennis team won their first District 4-3A/2A/1A tournament title Saturday.

Coach Mike Schireman did not think that was possible.

"After the first day, they didn't have much of a chance," he said.

Only one singles and doubles team advanced into the district finals.

However, since La Grande had a lot of first and second round winners on the first day of the tournament Friday, a lot of points came off that.

There was also another first for Schireman — a doubles district title from Greg Schuft and Tyler Lester.

Schuft and Lester withstood two Ontario teams to become district champions, but it was not easy.

In their first match, Schuft and Lester outlasted Christenson and Babij for a 7-6 (1-7), 7-5, 6-4 victory.

"Ontario was just crushing their second serve, so one of them (Lester) stayed back and actually used a lob to get back into it," Schireman said.

He also said the team of Kennington and Nelson, which Schuft and Lester beat 6-4, 6-2 in the final, was not particularly strong or unorthodox.

John Woodfield took home third after losing to Seales from Vale 6-3, 6-3 then beating L. Rembold from Baker 6-2, 6-4.

As for the girls, they ended up in fourth place.

Haley Hines played Nagel of Madras and Gibbs of Ontario, winning both playoff matches by a score of 8-2. Hines finished in fifth place.

Youngblood earned fourth place after losing to Rankin of Madras 7-6 (5-7), 5-7 and then to G. Ho of Baker 2-6, 7-5, 0-6.

Youngblood is unable to go to state, so Hines will take her place. The state tournament is Saturday in Corvallis.
