By Raenelle Kwock

Observer Staff Writer

The La Grande girls tennis team edged Fruitland, Idaho, 3-2 Friday, while the boys lost 4-1.

I think we would have been a lot more competitive, if we had our full (boys) team, La Grande coach Mike Schireman said.

The team was missing the No. 2 doubles team and the No. 2 and No. 3 singles players, he said.

So thats basically everybody from No. 1 had to move up a spot, and thats tough to do, Schireman said. In some cases, we moved up two spots.

Aaron Nebeker had the lone win against Mark Vanwerdurick, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

Nebeker played tough in his first singles varsity match, Schireman said.

No. 1 singles player Levi Morrison fell 6-0, 6-3 to Ben Judson.

The No. 1 doubles team of Greg Schuft and Tyler Lester, lost 6-4, 6-3 to Scott Schaleger and Drew Judson.

For the girls, No. 2 singles player Beth Youngblood defeated Kari Powlas 6-1, 6-1. No. 3 singles player Megan Sherer beat Sarah Harris, 6-3, 6-4.

The No. 1 doubles team of Karli Nebeker and Shalece Hibbert got the 6-3, 6-1 win over Courtney Hill and Kim Butler.

Teamwise, I thought the girls played well today, Schireman said. Anytime, you can pick up a win like that against a good team, its a good stepping stone.

There were some outstanding matches in the junior varsity doubles competition, he said.

Jennifer Hubbard and Nikki Nielson defeated the No. 2 doubles team of April Terell and Liz Canas 8-6.

Katelin Weaver and Caitlin Schoenfelder came back after losing the first set and won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 against Samantha Shoup and Tamyra McCury.

La Grande travels to Ontario Tuesday.
