IMPRESSIVE DEBUT: Freshman Kirsten Johnson (872) takes 12th in the 1,500-meter run at the OSAA Class 3A Track and Field State Championships Saturday in Eugene. (The Observer/PHIL BULLOCK).

EUGENE — La Grande junior Rick Anderson and senior Breezy Fredricksen took fifth in their respective events at the OSAA Class 3A Track and Field State Championships Saturday.

Anderson ran 51.47 seconds in the 400-meter dash final. Fredricksen jumped her best mark of the season at 10 feet, 3 inches in the pole vault.

Coach Duane Smiley said Fredricksen almost made 10-6 on her third attempt.

Fredricksen vaulted her best by 2 inches.

Smiley said Anderson did not run as fast as he had during the season.

Freshman Kirsten Johnson improved her time by 18 seconds in the 1,500-meter run. She was 12th with a 5 minute, 1.41 seconds time.

Senior Leif Bullock had a personal best time in the 1,500. He finished 12th (4:14.26).

On Friday, the girls' 3,000-meter run was "horrible" because of the rain, Smiley said.

Even in the horrid conditions, Johnson and Jessica Fulfer improved their times. Johnson improved by 24 seconds, while Fulfer improved by 20 seconds.

Dane Johnson had a personal best time in the 3,000.

Smiley said freshman Nathan Humphreys and sophomore Jason Karrels will be stronger next year in the long jump and high jump.

The girls' 4x100-meter relay team missed Saturday's finals by one place. The girls were ninth. The top eight teams advanced into the finals.

Smiley said freshman Cora Beach did not do as well in the hurdles, but she will be back next year to give it another run.

Overall, Smiley said it has been a good season for the team.

The team swept the district titles in Burns May 22.

At district, Smiley told the girls this was Larry Nice's last year as a coach and to dedicate the meet to him. The girls went out and won the district title.

Smiley said coaches Nice, Joe Brogdon, Amos Lee and Katlin Lafferty all worked to put together a good group of athletes.

Several Tigers will pursue higher education.

Fredricksen will pole vault at Central Washington University. Bullock will run at Lewis & Clark.

Travis Dixon will ski and run cross country at Whitman. Johnson will attend Middlebury to ski and run cross country.

Amanda Timm will play volleyball at the University of South Carolina. Amber Rasmussen will play basketball at Northwest Christian College. Jessica Fulfer will run at Spokane Community College.

Kylee Winkler and Kyle Puckett are headed to Boise State University.
