TIGERS ENTERTAIN AT CARNIVAL

MILTON-FREEWATER For not having a lot of athletes on the team, the La Grande track and field squad made the best of its showing Friday at the Carnival of Speed.

Our boys are few in number but came home with some nice efforts yesterday, La Grande coach Joe Sandoz said.

The Tigers finished fourth in the 13-team field, led by event winners Skylar MacDonald, Casey Fenwick and Chris Jones.

MacDonald, a first-timer in the sport, won the javelin.

Skylar MacDonald was probably the show of the meet for us, Sandoz said. On the first competitive throw of his life he wins the meet.

Sandoz said MacDonald hasnt even learned the right technique yet, but the junior threw the javelin 169 feet, 2 inches. High school athletes are using a new javelin this year, and Sandoz said that throw probably would have been past 170 feet with one of last years spears.

Fenwicks winning jump was 20-10. Casey has been very consistent, Sandoz said. I dont think hes anywhere close to being finished lengthening that.

Jones won the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.6 seconds. The hurdle field wasnt as strong this year. Chris is a very clean and technique kind of hurdler, Sandoz said.

On the girls side of the meet, Elgins Amber Looslie won three events. She won the 200 in 27.5, the 400 in 1:00.5 and tied for first with La Grandes Amanda Timm and Pendletons Jennifer La France in the high jump at 4-10.

Elgins Deleah Wiles was the other local winner on the girls side, winning the pole vault with a mark of 9-0.

Elgins Brandon Burgess was a double winner for the boys, taking the 1,500 in 4:28.9 and the 800 in 2:04.2.

The first local meet of the season is Thursday at La Grande High School. The meet starts at 2:30 p.m. and features Greater Oregon League teams Baker, Grant Union, Riverside and McLoughlin. Enterprise, Imbler, Powder Valley, Wallowa and Pine-Eagle are also slated to attend.
