TIGERS FALL TO PENDLETON IN SOFTBALL, BASEBALL
ISLAND CITY Pendleton survived a La Grande rally in the final inning and walked away with a 2-1 non-league softball victory Thursday.
The Buckaroos got two runs in the top of the sixth inning and a game-ending double play in the bottom of the seventh.
Last year we got taxed by them, and this year we gave them a run for their money, La Grande coach Nicole Christian said.
Christian put in pinch hitter Kinsey Chadwick to lead off the bottom of the seventh, and Chadwick drew a walk. A ground ball by Des McCoy moved Chadwick to second, and Erin Henjum responded with a run-scoring double.
The game ended when Amanda Marcum popped up to shallow right field and Henjum was doubled off second base.
Christian said her team had not faced a lot of live pitching but hit the ball well in the opener. She was pleased with bench players Chadwick and McCoy for triggering the rally.
Pendletons runs came with no outs in the sixth. Jill Quesenberry and Stephanie Alleman singled before Marcum replaced starter Megan Caldwell. Kari Kinnaman hit a two-run double before Marcum got the final three outs.
Kinnaman, the pitcher, gave up four hits, two of them to Marcum.

BOYS LOSE TO PENDLETON
PENDLETON La Grandes baseball record fell to 1-1 Thursday with a 10-2 non-league loss to Pendleton.
The visiting Tigers committed six errors, including four in a six-run fifth inning.
We committed some mental errors and then compounded it with some physical errors. We just were not mentally ready. We were a little flat today, La Grande coach Dennis Young said.
Pendleton had a 4-1 lead by the time it exploded in the fifth.
La Grandes single runs came off RBIs by Rob Searles and Zack Glasser. The Tigers had just two hits from Corey Royal and Tanner Mellinger.
Were about where I thought wed be at this time of the year, Young said. We just need time to get out in the field and take care of some things that need to be ironed out on the field.
La Grande plays Pendleton again Thursday at home.
