TIGERS REACH PERSONAL BESTS

EUGENE — Day 2 was better than Day 1 for the La Grande High School track and field team at the Class 3A state meet Saturday.

Three athletes set personal bests in their events, scoring a total of 17 points for the Tiger boys and girls.

La Grande's Skyler MacDonald threw the javelin 182 feet, 11 inches, good for second place.

"His best throw was his first throw at a state meet," La Grande coach Joe Sandoz said. "It was nice to have a La Grande uniform high on the podium."

MacDonald, a junior whose previous best was 180-9, also had a throw of around 179 feet. "He had a real strong series all the way through," Sandoz said.

La Grande's Johan Soderlund added a fourth-place finish for the boys, running the 400 meters in 50.76 seconds.

The boys finished the meet with 16 points.

"Our goal for our boys was to score more points than our form chart had us, and we did by one," Sandoz said.

Kristin Brogdon gave the girls their only team points with a fifth-place showing in the triple jump. Her leap of 35-11/4 was the second-farthest in school history, behind only Amy Crabtree's 35-8 set in the 1990s.

Brogdon didn't fare as well in the high jump, going 5 feet and finishing ninth. Teammate Malia Anderson was 14th in the 1,500 in 5:24.69.
