TIGERS TAKE SECOND AT OWN MEET
By The Observer
ISLAND CITY La Grande had the wind taken out of its sails Tuesday in its quest to win its own girls golf tournament.
The Tigers finished second, 35 strokes behind Hermiston, with a 388.
Our varsity girls did OK, but they know they can do better and will have to when it comes to districts if they want to go to state, La Grande coach Candy Brooks said.
Kelli Greenough and Kelli Tucker both shot 90s to pace the Tigers. Carrie Waldrop was next at 100, followed by Nicole Lewiss 108 and Sommer Presleys 121.
Brooks was particularly pleased with Lewiss score, considering that Lewis is a freshman experiencing her first year of tournament play.
Nicole Lewis was on fire, being as how shes a freshman and its her first season as a team player, Brooks said. She has the attitude it takes to work on the game and strive to improve.
Riversides Shannon Wetherell won medalist honors with a 78. Anna Jaramillo of Ontario was one stroke behind.
Enterprise finished sixth out of eight teams with a 430. Tasha Marcum led Enterprise with a 96.
Enterprise hosts its own tournament Monday at the Alpine Meadows Golf Course.
