TIGHT RACE, CLOSE FINISH MARK CLASSIC

By The Observer

UNION Jarrett Kuzmic led for only one block during Saturdays Catherine Creek Classic half-marathon, but he picked the best block to lead.

The last.

Kuzmic won the 13.1-mile race by outsprinting a pack of five in the final few yards, completing the course in 1 hour, 17 minutes, 54 seconds.

Kuzmic, of Caldwell, Idaho, stayed behind Hermistons Eric Jensen the entire race. Jensen set the pace, according to race organizer Tom Hayes, and led a pack that included Leonard Farr of Newberg, Shawn Lawler of Caldwell and David Jordan of Baker City.

With four miles to go, all five of those guys were running together, Hayes said.

Kuzmic finished six seconds ahead of Jensen in the closest finish ever in the Classic, which also hosted its largest field in three races, the half-marathon, a 5-kilometer and a 1-mile run. Ninety-two runners and walkers competed Saturday on a course that ran along Catherine Creek.

Farr finished third in the half-marathon in 1:18.17, while Lawler was fourth in 1:18.37 and Jordan fifth in 1:20.05.

Kuzmic is no stranger to Northeast Oregon road runs; he won in Lostine earlier this year, Hayes said. He let Jensen set the pace, then with about 30 yards to go, passed him and sprinted ahead to the finish line.

The womens winner in the half-marathon was Cynthia Morris, who crossed in 1:38.10.

The 5K winners were Juan Morales on the mens side in 16:38 and Angela Baxter for the women in 20:39.

Colin Baxter won the mile run in 6:24, with Sami Tugman having the top womens time in 7:52.

Thirty-five runners and walkers competed in the 5K, with 27 in the mile and 29 in the half-marathon. The race was a fund-raiser for the Union High School cross country team, of which Hayes is coach.
