ELGIN Youth prevailed Friday night at the fourth annual Mark Nichols Memorial Bullarama and barrel-racing event.

Chad Brinkman of Molalla, who finished fourth overall in the short go-round last year, was the only cowboy to stay on his bull in the short go-round.

The 20-year-old former Oregon State High School bull riding champion who got married three months ago walked away with a paycheck totalling $1,455.20 after scoring 86 points in the short go-round and 77 in the long go-round.

I knew that bull was good, Brinkman said of his short go-round ride named Shake It Up. It was a good bull. The one you want to draw every week. One youd like to pack up and take with you to every rodeo.

Being the only cowboy out of the six in the short go-round to stay on his bull was a treat for Brinkman.

It was nice. Hopefully I can make more money that way, and Im sure the fans like to see someone stay on, he said.

Winning the Mark Nichols Memorial belt buckle was another honor Brinkman was happy to ride out of the Elgin arena with.

The biggest honor is to win the Mark Nichols buckle. It means a lot, since he was a fellow bull rider, Brinkman said.

Going into the short go-round, Caldwell, Idahos Marcus Michaelis had the nights best score at 84 points. The ride earned him $1,183.20.

Last years winner in the long go-round Ty Portenier of Caldwell, Idaho finished in second with an 82 ride. Ned Cross of Doris, Calif., took third with an 81.

The only injury of the evening came when La Grandes Kyler Braseth was thrown from his bull and stepped on. He was treated and released from Grande Ronde Hospital.

Thirty-three cowboys were entered in the bull-riding event.

The other youngster to win an event in the evenings performance was 15-year-old Phillip Kenyon of Pendleton in the barrel racing.

Kenyon, the son of the weekends Elgin Stampede announcer Steve Kenyon, was the only rider to break the 18-second barrier with a 17.99-second time.
