SHOT PUT LEADER: Joseph's Clint Steen is the favorite to win the boys shot put title Friday at the District 8-2A Track and Field Championships at Eastern Oregon University. (The Observer file photo/PAT PERKINS).

The quest for state track and field berths begins and ends Friday.

District meets for local Class 1A and Class 2A schools will be held concurrently at Eastern Oregon Universitys track and field complex, with field events beginning at 9 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m.

The top two finishers in each event advance to next weeks state meets in Monmouth, plus any athlete who meets state qualifiers.

The Powder Valley boys will be going for their fourth straight District 4-1A title; the Badgers have already won four straight Class 1A state titles and are heavily favored to match Wallowa with five straight.

The Cougars won five state 1A titles from 1992 to 1996 but have since moved up to Class 2A, where theyre co-favorites with Joseph and Imbler for this years district championship.

Enterprise has won the last three district titles.

On the girls side, Imbler is the defending District 8-2A champion and will be challenged this year by Elgin and Nyssa.
