EUGENE — Trailing with tournament hopes on the line doesn’t scare the La Grande 9/10-year-old All-Star team. “They’ve been through it before,” La Grande manager Tony Boyd said. “There’s nothing I need to say, the boys just go out and do what they need to do.” That fearless attitude led to a 6-5 win against Corvallis in the opening round of the state tournament in Eugene Saturday Trailing early and often, La Grande fought back with Isaac Chamberlain and company. Corvallis led 5-2 with three outs left to record a win. La Grande didn’t back down. Kurt Boyd drew a lead-off walk in the sixth. Jake Workinger and Alec Cranford followed with a single and a double, respectively. After an out, Chamberlain knotted the game at 5-5 with a single driving in Workinger and Cranford. “He faked the bunt and the defense was out of position,” Boyd said. “(Chamberlain) came up with big hits during the district tournament, and is still doing it.” Left-handed Ryan Adams worked a scoreless seventh to bring his team back to the plate. This time Chamberlain delivered a two-out single to drive in pinch-runner Raymond Menez to end the game. “It’s a great way to start the tournament,” Boyd said. “Corvallis is a good team, and they hit us pretty well.” La Grande will play Hollywood at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
