ELGIN — Most people don’t see volleyball as an endurance sport. But those at Elgin High School Thursday can verify it is.

Weston-McEwen, ranked No. 1, defeated the Huskies in five games 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 15-10.

“I can’t be disappointed with the way the girls played,” Elgin head coach Twila Ivins said. “We just got swept the week before, and then we play the No. 1 team  to five games.

“We got a little tired in the end. Somehow we have to find a way to finish the match strong.”

It’s not unfamiliar territory for Elgin. The last two league games against the Tiger-Scots also went five games, and ended in a loss.

After dropping the opening game, Elgin took a commanding 11-3 lead in Game 2.

It evaporated quickly.

Weston-McEwen scored the next 11 points to regain the lead.

“The girls never got rattled,” Ivins said. “There’s just something in their minds that tells them they can play with (Weston-McEwen).

After winning Game 3, the Huskies grabbed a 22-17 lead in the fourth game.

The Huskies’ student section may have got a little over anxious, chanting, “It’s all over.”

That’s when Weston-McEwen proved worthy of its rank. The Tiger-Scots reeled off five of the last six points.

Presley Pahl powered the visiting team to the win in Game 5.

The senior tallied four kills in the game, including match point.

Tara Ludwig led the Huskies with 10 kills and seven blocks.

Karly Knapp finished with five kills.

The Huskies will challenge themselves at a tournament hosted by Weston-McEwen Saturday. Elgin will be without its three seniors.

“I told the girls not to look at the scoreboard,” Ivins said. “It’s going to be a great experience to see what next year’s team is going to look like.”
