TIGER HIGH-FIVE: The La Grande volleyball team meets at center court to celebrate a point against Weston-McEwen. The Observer/Casey Kellas The La Grande High School volleyball team made their home debut
Tuesday night, but despite the fanfare the Tigers lost in three games
to Weston-McEwen 25-14, 25-23 and 25-20.
La Grande got down early in the first game and never really were
able to make a run as the Tiger Scots ran away with it, winning by nine.
“I think the girls were a little nervous tonight playing at home for the first time,” head coach Melinda Becker said.
“We struggled to make plays when we were down, which really cost us.”
The second game started out the same way the first game did, with Weston-McEwen jumping out to a 5-1 lead.
The Tigers kept it close throughout the match and were able to tie the game at 21. With the score tied at 23 the Tiger Scots scored the next two points to take the game 25-23.
Weston-McEwen was tenacious at the nets, blocking several shots attempted by La Grande.
“I think our inexperience showed a little in this game,” Becker said. “We had our good moments, but for the most part we were kind of searching for answers.”
La Grande jumped out to an early lead in game three, leading by as much as four points early on. Weston-McEwen was able to keep it close however, and made a run to take the lead and eventually the match at 25-20.
“This was a match of which team could make the least mistakes. Unfortunately for us, we were the team that made the most mistakes tonight,” Becker said.
Cheyenne Ashley led the Tigers in kills with 11, while Shelby Hasse and Kaylee Gerdes each had two kills for the match.
Mariah Sain was a perfect six for six in digs, which is unusual considering she plays toward the back row on most nights.
Brittany Elliot contributed eight assists and six digs as well.
“I think that Weston-McEwen is a good school and will compete for their league title, but we could have played a better match tonight. We have a lot of things to work on in the coming weeks,” Becker said.
La Grande will have some time to work out the kinks, because they don’t play another match for two weeks, when they start league play on the road at Baker Sept. 29.
“I wish we had another game in there somewhere, but that’s just how the schedule works out. We’ll use that time to improve as a team.”
