PAYETTE, Idaho — The La Grande girls soccer team played a non-conference game in a rematch with Payette Saturday.

Tigers coach Elena Nightingale tried some new lineups and played some underclassmen in a 2-0 loss to the Pirates.

“I figured this would be a good opportunity to play some girls in new positions because we are in the middle of conference play, and this was a non-league game,” Nightingale said.

“I think in the long run it was a really good strategy and will give us more experience for the rest of the season.”

The Pirates scored early on in the game, and then wouldn’t score again until just a few minutes were left. So even though there may have been some inexperience on the field for the Tigers, they met the challenge and competed for all 90 minutes.

“I’m really proud with how we played today. I was just thinking long term and this was the perfect scenario for my team. Even though we lost, we learned a lot.”

Hannah Moore played goalie for the Tigers, and even though she is short for the position, Nightingale thought Moore played the ball well.

The Tigers now have the challenge of playing Mac-Hi next.

Pirates sneak past Tigers

PAYETTE, Idaho — The La Grande boys soccer team was unable to avenge a loss to Payette, losing to the Pirates 3-2 Saturday.

The Pirates scored the lone goal of the first half and led 1-0 at halftime. But the Tigers caught fire in the second half and scored two goals.

However, the Pirates added two of their own goals and pulled out the victory.

La Grande head coach Dan Mielke said he felt his team outplayed Payette, but simply ran out of time.

“I think that if that game is five minutes longer we would have won,” Mielke said. “We controlled the ball for the majority of the second half. They just caught a few lucky breaks and got one more goal than us.”

Ryan Warren and Treyce Schireman scored the two

La Grande goals. Mielke added that the Tigers are continuing to improve in their passing and shot opportunities.

“We played an overall good match today. I don’t feel too bad with how it turned out.”

Next for La Grande is a trip to Mac-Hi for a match with the defending league champions.
