CORVALLIS — It didn’t go the way Aaron Mills drew it up, but the Tigers boys basketball team still got a win.

La Grande knocked off Tillamook 57-45 in the opening round of the Class 4A State Basketball Championships Thursday.

Brad Townsend and Kevin Attila kept the Tigers in the game in the first half.

La Grande shot 32 percent from the floor to the Cheesemakers’ 45 percent, and the Tigers failed to make a basket from inside the 3-point arc.

Fortunately, La Grande knocked down 8-of-15 shots from behind the arc to stay in the game.

“I never thought it would happen like that,” head coach Mills said. “We just couldn’t get the ball inside. The team just passed the ball around the perimeter.

“But the shots were falling so I didn’t want to tell them to stop.”

Atilla knocked down 4-of-6 attempts, and Brad Townsend connected on 3-of-7. Nolan Mills also connected on his lone attempt of the half.

The Tigers went into the locker room knotted at 29-29.

Another positive that came out of the first half for La Grande was that Tillamook got into foul trouble.

Timber Klahn, a 6-foot-8 forward, picked up three fouls, and three other Cheesemakers’ starters had two fouls.

“That helped open things up inside,” Mills said. “They couldn’t quite be as aggressive on defense.

“Our boys also cleaned up their defense. Tillamook’s guards were beating us in the first half. We just got back to being more disciplined.”

Tillamook shot 15 percent from the floor in the second half, and La Grande went to work inside.

Terrence Chandler scored the first basket of the second half inside the paint, and Ryan Tooke scored a couple more as the Tigers built a seven-point lead after three quarters.

Townsend finished the game with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Attila added 17 points and seven assists.

Chandler and Tooke grabbed 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

Josh Rodrigues led Tillamook with 20 points.

The Tigers will take on Phoenix today at 3:15 p.m. in the semifinals.

Phoenix defeated Cascade 53-38 in the opening round.
