Tigers baseball outslugs Hermiston

Six pitchers were used, every kid had an at-bat, and La Grande scored in the seventh to beat visiting Hermiston, 11-10 Tuesday at Optimist Field. And now, these Tigers will play at Mac-Hi at 1 p.m. Saturday, hoping to claim their second consecutive Greater Oregon League crown. Back to this victory. In that seventh inning, Evan Humphrey (base hit) and Kevin Boyd (walk) reached base, setting up Josh Yundt with a potential game-winning hit. Yundt hit a pitch right back to the pitcher’s mound, and when the Hermiston hurler saw Humphrey running toward third, he spun, threw, and then watched the ball glance off his third baseman’s glove toward left field. Humphrey scores. Tigers win. Richie Carmichael, Zach Nice and Cody McKague (double, 4 RBIs) each belted two-run homers. Rounding out this Murder’s Row lineup was Anthony Nice (three hits, double, three runs), Jacob Johnston (double) and Humphrey (two hits). La Grande and Baker both sit atop the GOL standings at 7-3, meaning the Tigers will likely have to win both at Mac-Hi (4-17, 0-10 GOL) to win the league crown outright. “We gotta win two,” Tigers coach Mark Lanman said. “We talked to the kids about that (Tuesday). “They’re going to be gunning for us big time. We got to play to our level and not theirs.”
