VAULTED TIGER: La Grande’s Tyler Nice cleared a personal best 11 feet, 6 inches to take second in the pole vault Friday. - Observer photos/PAUL HARDER Someone needs to teach La Grande to share, or at least be a more generous host.
The Tigers are dominating the Greater Oregon League track and field in the high jump — they own the top four spots.
Jacob Johnson won the event by clearing six feet.
Brandon Powell (5 feet, 8 inches) and Tanner Greene (5 feet, 6 inches) finished second and third, respectively.
“It’s a great feat,” LHS head coach Duane Smiley said. “This is a problem coaches love to have.”
Nur Sofe continued his dominance of the hurdle events.
Fighting the wind, Sofe set a personal best with a 42.29 time in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.
A slight timing error knocked Sofe off his personal best pace in the 110-meter hurdles. He knocked down the final hurdle on his way to a 15.80 mark.
“Running in this wind is tough,” Smiley said. “It can throw you off your timing. A split second is the difference between hitting a hurdle and missing it.”
Still, Sofe took first by two seconds.
Carl Osborne made his return to the javelin in grand style.
The junior missed a couple of weeks after straining his back.
Osborne returned and blew away the competition with a 155 feet, 4 inch throw — a personal best. It’s also the top mark in the GOL.
Tyler Nice and Jayson Rasmussen also climbed to the top of the GOL in the pole vault.
Nice cleared 11 feet, 6 inches.
Rasmussen cleared 11 feet.
Both marks were personal bests.
MOTORING MONAHN: Tigers distance runner Cathy Monahn relaxes during the 3,000-meter run. Monahn took first with a 12:27.45 mark. - Observer photos/PAUL HARDER “It’s good to see these kinds of marks,” Smiley said. “It means a lot more coming at this facility, too. This is where we’ll be competing for the district title.”
FBLA week took its toll on the La Grande girls team. Eight members of the team missed the meet.
Shelby Miller took first in the 1,500-meter run with a 5:28.57 mark.
She also grabbed a fourth-place finished in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:33.22.
The Tigers found success in the other distance race.
Cathy Monahn outlasted the competition in the 3,000-meter run. She finished in 12:27.45, eight seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Sophomore Rachel Harris finished second in the 100-meter high hurdles with a 17.78 mark.
“We’re turning in some good times,” Smiley said. “The kids are working hard on some really tired legs. We’ll start transitioning to get ready for the end of the season.”
