Tigers girls fulfill district goals; boys fall short

PENDLETON — It all started with an attitude change, and snowballed into a district title. “I’m so happy for the girls,” La Grande head coach Kelli Miller said. “They’re ecstatic right now. We did a lot of the things we wanted to do, and held together under the pressure.” Darcy Ladendorff met a personal goal — shooting below 100. She finished with a 98, and a two-day total of 198. The sophomore took second-place. “It’s really exciting,” Ladendorff said. “I’m happy for the whole team. We all played really well today. It helped to know we were going to state no matter what. It took a lot of the pressure off.” The Tigers led Heppner by one stroke entering Day 2. After 27 holes, the two teams were tied. Somewhere along the way La Grande pulled away for a 24 shot victory. “It shows how well we can play when the pressure is on,” Miller said. Keri Urbanski followed in the shoes of her younger teammate by trimming her first round total. She finished with the best second day total, a 95. Urbanski finished one shot behind Ladendorff with a 199. Tessa Tsiatsos also took home a medal. She finished fourth with a 216. The Tigers will travel to Eagle Crest Ridge Course Monday. “We all want to break 100,” Ladendorff said. “We were pretty close to doing that. Our goal is to go out and have some more fun golfing.” Team scoresLa Grande 819; Heppner 843. Top -five 1. Maggie Armato, Heppner, 195; 2. Darcy Ladendorff, LG, 198; 3. Keri Urbanski, LG, 199; 4. Tigers experience growing painsPENDLETON — A season of experiencing high school golf ended abruptly for the La Grande boys golf team at the 4A district tournament. The Tigers finished fourth with a team score of 805. “It was a rough day for the kids,” LHS head coach Ron Evans said. “The boys were pretty down after getting down. They don’t have the perspective that they’ll be back next season.” Mac-Hi won the Greater Oregon League by shooting 704. For the first time in many years La Grande will not be represented at the state tournament. Junior Mitchell Henry will spend a year second guessing where he could have cut two strokes from his two-day total of 190 — the margin Henry missed grabbing a ticket to state. As for the four freshman making the trip, it’s experience that will help fuel the fire for next season. “I think the nerves got to (Mitchell),” Evans said. “It’s a tough thing to experience for the first time. But all the kids improved a lot by the end of the year. That’s what we need to focus on.” Team scoresMac —Hi 704; Ontario 706; Baker 730; La Grande 805 Top —five Jonathon Stone, MH, 163; Nick Stanford, MH, 170; Dallas Brockett, Ontario, 171; 4.
