UNION — An unusual day lead to trim numbers at the Buffalo Peak golf course Tuesday.

Little wind helped the La Grande boys golf team to its best showing of the year, shooting a combined score of 389.

Still, it wasn’t enough to take first. That honor went to Baker with a team score of 370.

“It was a great effort by the whole team,” LHS head coach Ron Evans said. “Coming back from spring break, you never know how the kids are going to do.”

Mitchell Henry paced the Tigers by recording a 40-42.

At 6,049 yards from the blue tees, Henry remained calm with the daunting task of navigating the tall grass.

The 10-over-par score brought home first place.

Taylor Mutch and Tanner Orton turned in rounds of 98 and 99, respectively.

“This course will eat kids up if they let it,” Evans said. “(Mitchell’s) attitude really set the tone for him. He’s never too up or too down. The game is simple fun for him. That’s the key for the whole team right now, just have fun.”

Ethan Delong of Baker finished second with a round of 92.

La Grande freshmen James Matheson (110) and Chris GianAndre (119) didn’t let their coach down.

“Those are two good rounds for the first time out here under tournament conditions,” Evans said. “Now we know what we need to work on.”

The Tigers will travel to the Mac-Hi Invite at noon Friday.
