ISLAND CITY — It wasn’t hail falling from the sky at the La Grande Country Club Tuesday. Those were balls coming in every direction after a thunderous smack against a tree branch.

Few golfers found relief on the nine-hole track. It was a combination of high winds and soaring numbers — not a great duo in golf.

Still, the La Grande boys golf team found the silver lining on an overcast day.

“We’re young,” LHS head coach Ron Evans said. “It was a tough day on the course with the wind and all the trees.”

Ontario’s Chase Fields led the five-team field with an 82.

Chase Baty of Pendleton finished a shot back with an 83.

Mitchell Henry led the Tigers with a round of 100.

La Grande finished fifth with a team score of 455.

The silver lining: The junior varsity team finished with the same score.

A freshmen-filled team is fighting every day for a chance to play.

Ten golfers will be fighting for a spot into the next tournament today.

“It’s good for us,” Evans said. “It drives the boys to work harder. Everyone is out putting in some extra time, and it’s going to pay off.”

Case in points — Tanner Orton. His round of 102 beat four varsity players, and was two off Henry.

The Tigers will travel to the Vale Invite Friday. Tee-times begin at 10 a.m. MT.
