Tigers knock off La Salle

By The Observer

MILWAUKIE In a battle of two top-10 ranked teams Saturday, the La Grande boys prevailed.

The eighth-ranked Tigers traveled to La Salle and beat the fifth-ranked Falcons, 3-2.

Matt Nightingales goal off a pass from J.B Weber with five minutes left broke a 2-all tie.

Seth Pennington opened the scoring with a free kick that went around La Salles defensive wall 15 minutes into the game.

Pennington added another goal in the 25th minute off a pass from Greg Schuft to put the Tigers ahead 2-0 at the half.

Dustin Fuchs had three big saves in the first half to keep La Salle from scoring, La Grande coach Jessy Watson said.

In the second half, a midair collision between La Grandes Aaron Nebeker and a La Salle player resulted in the La Salle player breaking his leg.

We had a 15 to 20 minute stoppage and that changed the momentum, Watson said.

La Salle took control and tied the game with two unanswered goals before Nightingales last-minute winner.

Its good for our guys to know we can compete at that level, Watson said. But theres still things we can work on that were made evident to them.

We have the next three weeks to prepare for state, but first we need to concentrate on winning our next four games and winning the division.

La Grande (9-1) plays McLoughlin at Milton-Freewater on Oct. 15.

Preparedness leads

to easy Tiger victory

MADRAS Lindsey Carmichaels goal in the opening minute set the tone Saturday as La Grandes girls soccer team got back on track.

Four days after tying The Dalles 0-0, the Tigers grabbed an easy 7-0 win over Madras on the road.

After Tuesdays game, we talked about being prepared, La Grande coach Alex Steenstra said. Today we were mentally prepared.

It was La Grandes seventh straight shutout.

Carmichael scored the opening goal off a pass from Alexis Baum. Carmichael scored again on a header off a cross pass from Caitlin Schoenfelder in the 15th minute, and Chelsea Longs penalty kick in the 32nd minute gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead at the half.

In the second half, Alexis Baum took a Monnie Bennett pass for a score, and Leigh Baum scored off a Nicole Lewis pass. Bennett got another assist when she found Amber Rasmussen for a goal, and Nicole Crow wrapped up the scoring with an unassisted goal in the final minute of the contest.

La Grande (6-1-1 overall, 5-0-1 Eastern Oregon League) hosts Pendleton in a non-league game Tuesday.
