JOHN DAY — Another inconsistent game for the La Grande Tigers football team resulted in a 43-13 loss to Grant Union Friday night. The Prospectors started the second half by returning the opening kick off 92 yards for a touchdown to take a 35-0 lead. La Grande didn’t find any answers on offense until Caleb McKague found Brandon Powell on a 14-yard pass with 1:46 remaining in the third quarter. Brice Erickson added a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter for the other La Grande score.Matt Nicholson led all runners with 102 yards on just 10 carries, while Erickson had 34 yards on eight carries with one touchdown. McKague finished the game seven for 13 with 111 yards and one touchdown. The Tigers will begin a four-game home stand next Friday when they host Nyssa in a battle of winless teams. The first half was scoreless in this one, but there were many highlights as the Tigers played tenacious defense and didn’t allow very many shots on goal. “Our goalie never really saw any action in the first half,” La Grande head coach Dan Mielke said. “We really got after it on defense.” In the second half Chris Gianandrea broke the scoreless tie and gave the Tigers the only goal they would need for the day. La Grande now has two league wins on the season. Mielke says he has been preaching defense since he took over this Tigers’ squad. “I’m a defensive-minded coach,” he said. “I think we have good speed and are well conditioned and I think we can run with anyone.” Mielke said his team is comfortable playing defense and doesn’t get fatigued as soon as the opposition. John Mattes, James Mathson and Joey Tinker are three players who stepped up defensively for the Tigers Saturday. La Grande will return to action Thursday in a much anticipated match-up against Baker. That game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. La Grande -- 0 0 6 7 Grant Union -- 14 14 7 8
