Tigers maul McLoughlin on the road diamond

MILTON-FREEWATER — The La Grande baseball team started off Greater Oregon League play with a pair of wins over McLoughlin Saturday. The Tigers won the first game, 6-5, before rolling in the second game, 10-0.
In Game 1, La Grande made the most of three hits to scratch six runs across home plate. The Tigers
jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the fifth inning.
LHS held a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh when McLoughlin scored two runs. But Mitch Workinger was able to close the game out to record the save.
Josh Gambill finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Eli Wisdom had the other La Grande hit. Kaleb White earned the win, going five innings, allowing three hits and striking out 10.
Workinger struck out three in two innings of relief.
Dylan Shuler and Jeffrey Jones led the Pioneers with two hits each. Shuler took the loss, going seven innings and striking out two.
La Grande had no trouble in Game 2, picking up 12 hits and riding a stellar pitching performance by Gambill in the six-inning victory. Gambill went six innings, allowing three hits and striking out five.
The entire LHS lineup recorded a hit, with White and Gambill both hitting home runs. Brandon Cedarholm added two hits.
“We attacked the ball,” LHS head coach Mark Lanman said. “Our quality at-bats were pretty good. We’re getting better, which is the positive thing.”
La Grande is now 6-4 overall on the season and 2-0 in the GOL and hosts Pendleton at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
